Team Canada preview for Gold Cup 2023
Teams from Concacaf, including Haiti and Cuba, will have opportunities to make a significant impact within their respective groups during the tournament. Additionally, Qatar has once again been extended an invitation to participate. The group stage is scheduled to take place from June 24 to July 4, followed by the quarter-finals on July 8-9, the semi-finals on July 12, and ultimately, the grand finale on July 16.
In a historic achievement for the Canadian team, they have managed to advance to the knockout stage in each of the past three editions of the Concacaf Gold Cup. This unprecedented feat marks a significant milestone in the program’s history. In the 2021 tournament, they reached the semifinals for the fourth time but unfortunately faced elimination following a narrow 2-1 defeat against Mexico.
John Herdman, the current head coach, joins an exclusive group as only the third Canadian to participate in six Concacaf Gold Cups. His leadership makes him the third head coach to guide Canada in three editions of the tournament. Herdman boasts a commendable record of five wins from nine matches. Similar to his predecessors Holger Osieck and Stephen Hart, he has led the team to the knockout phase twice, with a quarterfinals appearance in 2019 and a semifinals run in 2021. Prior to Herdman, both Osieck and Hart guided Canada to six victories from 12 matches, with the notable achievement of “Holger’s Heroes” clinching the Concacaf Gold Cup championship in 2000.
