Robert Rinder and The Secret Barrister amongst competition judges for Justis Writing Competition

This week, legal technology company Justis have announced the judges for their annual Law and Technology International Writing Competition, which include Robert Rinder, also known as Judge Rinder from the popular TV show, and best-selling author The Secret Barrister.
The company behind the international competition, which has a grand prize of £2,000, also announced a one-week extension to the competition deadline, giving students from around the world extra time to write and submit their entries. The new deadline for the competition will be the 8th of December 2019.
Alongside Robert Rinder, and The Secret Barrister, the competition also has an impressive variety of expert judges from the fields of law, technology, research and publishing, including:
• Pete Ward, Editor of Modern Law Magazine
• Aishah Hussain, Reporter for Legal Cheek, the UK’s most-read legal website
• Dr Liz Dowthwaite, Research Fellow, specialising in online data, privacy and social media at the University of Nottingham
• Tom Bangay, Director of Content at Juro
• Masoud Gerami, Managing Director of Justis, a vLex company
• Emily Allbon, Creator of tldr.legal and Senior Lecturer, Director of Mooting, and Programme Director LLB in Legal Practice at The City Law School, City, University of London,
• Roger V. Skalbeck, Professor of Law and Associate Dean for Library and Information Services at the University of Richmond
• David Wills, Editor of Legal Information Management and Squire Law Librarian at the University of Cambridge
About the competition
The Justis International Law & Technology Writing Competition 2020 launched on the 1st October 2019 for its third consecutive year. The competition, which accepts entries from university and college students around the world, tasks them to write 1,000 words on one of three topics. This year the topics are: technology and the future of legal practice social media, data and privacy, and access to justice and technology.
With a grand prize of £2,000 and publication on the popular Legal Cheek Journal – one of the most read legal websites in the UK – Dr Matthew Terrell, Head of Marketing for Justis, who oversees the competition, hopes that they will receive more entries than ever before, and talks about how this competition can help students to stand out in an overcrowded job market:
“Moving from university to the workplace can be challenging and very competitive, and we hope this competition can help students stand out from the crowd with their ability to produce professional, thought-provoking articles. Last year we received so many fantastic entries and I am hoping we receive even more this year.”
Alongside the grand prize for the overall winner, three prizes of £250 will be awarded to three authors voted best in category. Each judge will be anonymously scoring shortlisted entries in the new year, shortly before the best in category winners, and overall winner, are announced in spring 2020.
Additionally, the overall winner and best in category articles will be published on the Justis and vLex blogs, and also included in Justis’ international newsletter that reaches thousands of legal practitioners around the world. In past years, competition entries have been published in Legal Information Management and on the popular Artificial Lawyer website.
Past winners of the competition include students from Harvard University, the University of Oxford, Trinity College Dublin, the University of London, BPP, and the University of Auckland. Roisin Costello, the Overall Winner from 2018 shares her thoughts on the competition:
