  • CNN reports that Pelosi has been approached by several lawmakers to continue her role as House Democratic Leader.
  • Some Democrats want Pelosi to remain as the leader of a divided House.
  • Pelosi is widely praised for her ability to shepherd consequential pieces of legislation through Congress.

Nancy Pelosi, House Speaker, is well-known for her ability to rally Democratic lawmakers for tough votes on consequential legislation such as the Affordable Care Act or the Inflation Reduction Act.

Pelosi has been the leader of the House Democratic caucus since 2003. She was widely expected to resign next year to make space for a new group of leaders after a term limit. agreement she made while pursuing the speakership following the 2018 midterm elections.

The results of the 2022 midterms, thought, have altered the calculus  — at least for some Democrats — as the party could potentially retain an incredibly slender majority after all the results are tallied.

Pelosi has been contacted by several members who have asked her to remain in her role in the new Congress — even if the party falls short of retaining its current majority, pointing to her success in maintaining party discipline, according to two sources with knowledge of the situation who spoke with CNN.

Drew Hammill, a spokesperson for Pelosi, didn’t have a timeline for any announcements by the lawmaker.

He stated in a statement to CNN that “The speaker will announce when she makes an an announcement.” “Until then, let us all enjoy Kevin McCarthy losing a speakership that his party hasn’t even won.”

To control the House, a party must win 218 of the 435 total seats.

As of Nov. 12, Republicans had won 210 seats while Democrats claimed 198. according to Insider and DDHQ.

The House currently controls 220-212 by Democrats.

The lower chamber was last occupied by Republicans in January 2019. They lost seats in the 2018 midterms, and surrendered their majority to Democrats.

Pelosi was the chamber leader from 2007-2011 and regained his position as House Speaker in 2019.
