Writer-Director Marie Delanote Wins More Awards For Her ‘Brutally Brilliant’ Screenplay ‘The Rainbow Is Black’

Writer-Director Marie Delanote is delighted to announce that her screenplay The Rainbow Is Black has just added two more fabulous recognitions to its list this week (the week that includes #WorldSuicidePreventionDay – a subject that features in the screenplay) :

  • It has been named as a finalist in the New Renaissance category at the London Film Festival 2021
  • and has also been officially selected to be included in the Berlin Art Film Festival 2021.

Previous awards include The Jury Prize at the Prix Royal Paris Screenplay Awards (they described it as “Brutally Brilliant”) and recognition as a ‘Hot Film In The Making’ by Roy W.Dean Grant (From The Heart Productions).

The Rainbow Is Black is a heart wrenching drama exploring the many ways of coping with serious mental health issues, by accompanying a mother and her three daughters through their difficult, nonetheless hauntingly humane journey – reminiscent of authentic European cinematic family dramas. It touches upon subjects many shy away from, such as suicide and psychiatric treatments. It is both a movie and a movement to:

– raise awareness and start conversations to enable people who are feeling desperate to speak up and seek help
– help people gain a wider perspective of this issue and facilitate debate around the treatment of severe depression in the 21st century

Despite advances in mental health care many depression related treatments date back to the Victorian era, such as isolation and electroshock treatment. Whilst great advances have been made, the experiences and results I have seen close up still do not address some of the fundamental challenges faced by many people who get institutionalised. Professionals react with exterior methods in order to heal something which can only heal from within.” – Marie Delanote, Writer-Director of ‘The Rainbow Is Black’

‘According to the latest figures from the Office of National Statistics (ONS), 1,603 suicides occurred between April and July last year in 2020. Meaning thirteen people ended their life every day.’ – Make A Difference Media

Marie is determined to start conversations and raise awareness of mental health, suicide, and the treatments available for depression. She wrote the movie following her own struggles with depression and the experiences of someone very close to her.

“Experiencing the effects of severe depression from so close made me think deeply about what we can do to avoid this. Through this film, I want to open a window and show the world how we can do things differently. It is so important to start doing things differently. Actions, not words, are the best teacher. Forgiveness, love and hope. Four different women, the same trauma but all dealing with it differently. As the writer-director, I am passionate to shed light on the human mind and emotions and bring it up close to a wider audience.”  – Marie Delanote, Writer-Director of ‘The Rainbow Is Black’

Rebecca Grant, Producer and Actress (Holby City, Stan Lee’s Lucky Man, Midsomer Murders, BBC series Doctors) says of the movie:

“The Rainbow Is Black is gripping, sad and an eye-opener. This is a story that has to be told”

The movie is in pre-production and it is hoped that filming will start this year. Sponsorship and investment is still being raised and a crowd funder is also in place for production costs: www.greenlit.com/project/rainbow-black. Marie already has an impressive list of cast and crew in place, including Sir Marco Robinson, who has this to say about his involvement as Executive Producer:

I have a very strong emotional connection to ‘The Rainbow is Black’ as I have dealt with acute depression most of my life.
Depression happens when your existing life reality does not match your desired life outcome…and we have not been given the tools and resources to deal with that situation. I am part of this film because I want to bring to the attention of many people that are suffering that we can overcome it. I am extremely proud that Marie has received these awards … phenomenal news which definitely helps get our wonderful film mainstream.”
– Sir Marco Robinson (creator of Ch4’s “Get a House for Free”, #1 bestselling author, award-winning entrepreneur, also starring in his movie “Legacy of Lies” which reached #4 on Netflix)
