Will a robot take your job? It is estimated that over 22 million jobs are at risk in the United States
A shocking new report suggests AI & automation could replace nearly half of all USA jobs.
The research by data analysts at NetVoucherCodes has looked at job sectors across the 50 states to identify which are most likely to be replaced by automation or artificial intelligence in the future.
US wide, the data has revealed that nearly half of all jobs, around 55 million, could be replaced by automation with around 12% or 14 million, likely to be taken over by artificial intelligence.
In the top 5 highest risk states of California, Texas, Florida, New York & Ohio the research follows the trend highlighting 6.78 million jobs are at high risk of being taken over by automation with a further 12.5 million at medium risk.
Among those roles at risk of being replaced by AI are Cashiers, Customer Service, Representatives, Bookkeepers, IT Support Technicians, Billing Clerks & HR Assistants.
Jobs at low risk of being replaced by AI include CEOs, Financial Managers, Specialist Medical Practitioners, School Principals and Senior Police Officers.
Interestingly, 15.7 million job sector roles are likely to use AI to increase productivity.
California is the state with the highest number of jobs at medium to high risk as a result of AI or automation. The projected figure is just over 1.5 million.
Other states most likely to suffer include Texas, New York and Florida. Among those states least at risk from job losses as a result of AI and automation are Wyoming, Vermont, Hawaii and Maine.
The data also revealed the top ten careers most likely to be replaced by artificial intelligence with roles including cashiers, IT support technicians, HR assistant and paralegal assistant all making the list.
The data analysts used AI Bot ChatGPT to carry out the research, analyzing over 450 job sectors across the 50 US states.
John Strizaker from NetVoucherCodes analyzed the data. He said: “It’s really interesting to see how powerful AI and automation is becoming.
“The data we’ve pulled together shows that a lot of lower income jobs are the ones that are at a higher risk of being replaced. When we break this down, we realize it’s because these jobs often involve a lot of the same repetitive tasks. This can be inputted into a computer and can be done automatically.
“The jobs that aren’t at risk are ones that really require human thinking and decision making, like nurses, doctors along with creative roles such as fashion designers and hairdressers.
“It may surprise people that jobs like bus drivers and delivery couriers are at risk of automation but a machine can easily take over these jobs. They require little human decision making, you could programme a route into a machine and away it goes.
“Although this might be a concern in the near future, there’s a lot of benefits to AI and automation. It will increase productivity, especially in creative fields and it will be able to take over repetitive tasks and free up workers for other things that require thinking.”
