What is Ransomware as a Service?

The digital world is vast and contains enormous information in the form of blocks and units. This is due to these blocks of information that the entire digital platform runs and is standing high. Due to this, the platform is prone to attacks in the form of fraud and other online threats including ransomware and viruses. As the makers of this two software find it easy to inject into the chain, they usually find their victims in the internet blockchain firms. In this article, we are going to discuss ransomware from the perspective of a service. Though it may sound absurd it will clear your thoughts and will show you the possibilities in the digital world. So, let us start the journey!

Ransomware as a survive

It is usually consolidated in a short form of RaaS. There are usually two parties involved in the process which are the affiliates and the operators which are the sole backbone of ransomware operation. The affiliates pay these operators to go along with some attacks pre-planned. Thus, this is a pre-planned attack on some parties and is seen as a service more than a simple attack. For the victim, it is an attack but for the affiliate, this is no less than a service. This is regarded as one of the models of SaaS that is software-as-a-service.

Working on the RaaS model

Just like when you do not have a special skill to perform a particular work, you usually hire someone from the field, an expert in the area. This model of RaaS allows the affiliates lacking the skill of developing ransomware to enjoy this as a service and go along with the desired results. The facility of RaaS can be found easily on the dark web where these are advertised as a service just like you see average items on the simple internet platform.

The affiliate hires a RaaS service provider which has the facility of 24×7 customer support and pays to sue the ransomware. The developer on the other hand on receiving such a request and payment thereof sets up a victim portal and manages the ideas with which he can trap the victim.

Common RaaS platforms

The platforms that provide RaaS services many. Though, some of them are consolidated here.

  • DarkSide

This platform is associated with an eCrime group and has the name CARBONSPIDER associated with it. These usually target window-operated machines and have recently developed their reach to Linux and other platforms, targeting big enterprises whose platforms use Linux and Windows. The DarkSide ransomware is the most common name of this ransomware.

  • REvil

The other name of REvil is Sodinokibi. This ransomware has a record of being behind one of the largest demands from ransomware that scaling to a whopping $10 million. The group named PINCHY SPIDER is involved in operations behind REvil and has around 40% stacks in the profits involved.

  • Dharma

The word Dharma is an Indian word that means religious and pure. Opposite to this, this is an Iranian threat group that has had its place on the dark web since 2016 and is attacking a large number of customers usually demanding bitcoins from their targets. The control of Dharma is not central and has associations with some groups like CrowdStrike.

Thus, one can see how ransomware creation and its circulation have become a pure business in the digital market.
