Sen. Cassidy Defends GOP Leadership After Midterms
  • After the disappointing midterm results, Sen. Bill Cassidy stood up for Republican leaders.
  • Cassidy stated that “one person leads our party” is not possible unless it’s a sitting President.
  • He said he will continue supporting Mitch McConnell, but avoided asking the same question about Donald Trump.

Republican Senator Bill Cassidy has defended GOP leaders after disappointing midterm election results and said that the party was “not a religion.”

According to the Louisiana lawmaker, he said that he will continue supporting Mitch McConnell’s nomination as Senate leader. However, there may be a “necessary discussion about ideas” within the party. 

NBC’s Chuck Todd posed the question of whether maintaining support for the same GOP leaders – namely McConnell, Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, former President Donald Trump, and the RNC’s Ronna McDaniel – will create “a problem for Republicans going forward.” 

“First, we are not a cult. Cassidy stated that we are not like a cult. “Unless she or he happens be a sitting president, we won’t have one person appointed to our leadership. We should have a set principles, ideas and legislative accomplishments that are our lodestar. This is where we need to be.

 

Cassidy stated that Republicans should “explain the American voter why Republicans possess a better vision of the future” disappointing midterm resultsFor a GOP that was banking upon a red wave. 

After several of his failed presidential bids, a lot of the criticism has been directed at Donald Trump. his hand-selected candidates lostTheir races. Trump himself is expected to announceOn November 15, he will run for president. 

On “Meet the Press”, Todd asked Cassidy if he would support Trump for the GOP nomination in 2024, or if he would cheer on a new candidate such as Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis. 

Cassiday said, “Who will be our next nominee will find itself out.” “I believe our next candidate will look to the future, and not the past, and I believe our next candidate won’t lose. So I’m looking forward to supporting a candidate who looks to the future.

Todd asked Cassidy if he supported Trump. Cassidy replied that it was a “theoretical, which actually I don’t think will happen because we have to look to the future.”

“I will declare that we should be an alliance of ideas and principles. Cassidy agreed. “And I believe our next candidate will similarly reflect that perspective.”
