Democratic Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto has won one of the nation’s closest-watched Senate races in Nevada, deciding the fate of Senate control for the next two years.
Masto, who made history as the country’s first Latina Senator in 2016, won this year’s elections against Republican Adam Laxalt (a former state attorney general), in a race unanimously rated “toss-up”. The race was too close to call days after voting was completed. There were still absentee ballots being counted, and slow processing times in Reno County which contains the large cities of Las Vegas. Masto’s victory ensures Democratic control over the Senate until the next cycle in two years.
The Senate’s 2022 election cycle is not over, however, as neither Democratic Sen. Raphael Warnock nor GOP challenger Herschel Wade received more than 50% of the vote in Georgia. As a result, a runoff election will be held in December.
The results of the House election are still being reported.
