Stage3 Media Works Premieres Docufilm “THE PHENOMENON OF CYBERPUNK”

Los Angeles, CA (February 9, 2021) — Today, multimedia content studio Stage3 Media Works launches “The Phenomenon of Cyberpunk,” a captivating dive into the dystopian world, underground aesthetic, and artistic impact of cyberpunk – and its transformation from literary genre to subculture to full-fledged phenomenon. This is the first installment in an episodic docuseries that explores a range of provocative social subjects, artistic movements, pop culture sensations, generational shifts, and other compelling, transcultural curiosities.

The premiere episode – “The Phenomenon of Cyberpunk” – separates fact from science-fiction, exploring the movement’s gritty technological setting, antiauthoritarian archetypes, corporate-urban fusion, counter-culture iconography, subverted neo-futurism, and the diminishing line between perception and reality. The episode unravels the inspirations behind cyberpunk, as well as its influence across art, literature, film, architecture, and gaming.

The episode features interviews and commentary from:

  • Sherryl Vint, editor of Science Fiction Studies and the Director of Speculative Fiction and Cultures of Science at UC Riverside, where she studies popular culture and science, biopolitical theory, and technoculture.
  • John Semley, a science-fiction writer and researcher from Toronto, Canada, whose writing explores institutional culture, the clash between ideological and epistemological systems, and the psychedelic renaissance.
  • David Roh, Associate Professor of English and Director of Digital Matters at the University of Utah – researching new media studies, contemporary American literature, and transnational Asian American literature.
