Applying Evidence-Based Interventions to Improve Healthcare Management and Care

Applying Evidence-Based Interventions to Improve Healthcare Management and Care

Morgan James’ new release, Agile Implementation: A Model for Implementing Evidence-Based Healthcare Solutions into Real-World Practice to Achieve Sustainable Change, by Malaz Boustani, MD, MPH, Jose Azar, MD, Craig A. Solid, PhD, offers proven methods for implementing sustainable change and improvement within healthcare delivery. Within Agile Implementation, Boustani, Azar, and Solid describe the underlying theories and frameworks that currently define healthcare delivery systems and explain the eight steps of the Agile Implementation Model.

Malaz Boustani, MD, MPH, Jose Azar, MD, Craig A. Solid, PhD, understand that implementing evidence-based care into real-world practices is difficult and time-consuming, as even the most effective methods have limited flexibility and fail as often as they succeed. Boustani, Azar, and Solid studied and experimented with healthcare delivery systems despite these challenges, eventually discovering how an individual’s interactions with the complex social systems of hospitals, clinics, and other healthcare providers can shape their decisions and behaviors. By leveraging theories of behavioral economics alongside their findings, they developed the Agile Implementation Model, a process for selecting, adapting, applying, evaluating, sustaining, and scaling evidence-based healthcare interventions.

Agile Implementation depicts a model that works with the unique features of a facility and those that work within it. Boustani, Azar, and Solid provide illustrative examples of today’s complex healthcare environment in order to encourage healthcare administrators and quality improvement professionals as they assess the strengths and weaknesses of their own facilities.
